The Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection includes works on a broad array of subjects but is particularly strong in the areas of religion, history, and literature. Specific named collections cover topics such as Paris in the 19th century, T. E. Lawrence, fine press books, the Christian Sabbath, and children’s literature. Digital Collections will grow to feature unique manuscripts and editions that highlight the history and use of the book as well as religious practice. 

 

Seville Antiphonal

An antiphonal is a choir book with lyrics and melodies for chants performed during Catholic offices, or prayer services held throughout the day. This antiphonal was originally created in the late 16th Century for Catalina de Ribera, a Franciscan Abbess and Andalusian noblewoman in Seville, Spain. 

Kamakurayama Momiji No Ukina

Kamakurayama Momiji No Ukina is an example of kibyoshi, or a Japanese picture book popular during the Edo Period. This three-volume book contains stories of love and scandal written by Bunkeido and illustrated with woodblocks by Torii Kiyonaga.
