Browsing Records
Below is guidance on how to view image and audiovisual files in the Quartex platform and using the IIF Mirador viewer.
Click 'Browse all' in the navigation bar, which appears in the masthead, at the top of every page to access all available records.
Click on an item's title or thumbnail from this list to navigate to your chosen record.
The 'Summary' tab provides a brief overview of the digitized item, including key fields, such as title, date, subjects, and format, where relevant. The full metadata that appears beneath the viewer/player provides more details, such as descriptions and copyright information. Any metadata that appears within a gray bubble links to a list of all records cataloged with that term.
Hovering the cursor in the image viewer displays a menu with the following options in the top right of the viewing window:
- Zoom in or out
- Toggle full page view
- Rotate left or right
- Go home – resets the image to the default view
Navigate through any multi-page record by selecting ‘Browse Images’ or by using the arrows to move between images. Use the page number input box on the top right to open a specific image within the record.
The dimensions of the image viewer can be toggled between full and half width using the arrows to the bottom right of the viewing window.
Click the “Download” button to open a pop-up window that allows you to save metadata and transcripts where available.
Select the "Embed" button to obtain a code to display the record elsewhere on another site using software such as an iFrame. Choose to include display of the Summary Metadata and/or Transcripts (where available), along with configuring the desired display image(s).
Bookmark the record or select items within a multi-image record for future reference in My Account. Learn more about these features in My Account.
Find additional viewing options including the ability to compare images from multiple records using the IIF Mirador Viewer.

Audio and video files will display a player instead of the image viewer.
Click the 'Play’ button in the middle of the player to start playing the content. Once the content begins playing, a control bar becomes visible at the bottom of the player anytime a user hovers over it. Controls enable users to skip forward or backward 15 seconds, pause, adjust the volume, mute, view total duration as well as jump to any point in the content by timestamp, turn on closed captioning (if the audio or video file has been transcribed), adjust playback quality settings (video only), or view the content in full-screen.
Like in the image viewer, the arrows at the bottom right of the player expand or reduce the size of the AV player through options to toggle to full width or half width.
If the audio or video file has been transcribed, you can view the transcript by switching to the transcript tab. If Auto Scroll is checked, the transcript will move along with the audio. Clicking any of the orange hyperlinked time stamps will take you to that part of the audio or video file.

Mirador can be used to view any image-based record and is one of the image viewers developed to support the International Image Interoperability Framework, known as IIIF. On Quartex sites the Mirador viewer is accessed by a button that appears below the Metadata Summary panel. All records also feature a link to the record’s IIIF manifest next to the link for the Mirador viewer. The manifest will open in a new window and display XML.
For multi-item or compound objects Mirador offers a full-spread or “Book” layout that allows you to view two sequential images at once, a gallery style display of thumbnails for easier browsing, and the ability to horizontally scroll through all images in an asset at full-size (versus the thumbnail browse offered in the default Quartex viewer).
Next to the menu button for the various viewing options, you’ll find an “i” for the Info button, which will display the metadata for each record, as well as a full-screen option.
Users can compare non-sequential images hosted in your repository or any other by inserting additional viewing panes, referred to as “slots” in the viewer. Click into the slot, and then you can paste the IIIF manifest URL of the object you wish to compare.
Click on any thumbnail once the object’s images have loaded and you should see your chosen image appear in the slot beside your initial object. You can select a different viewing option for each object in each slot.
